Bay Area Beats: 32nd Annual Fillmore Street Festival

image

For 32 years, artists and musicians have come out in droves to participate in the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival. It’s the largest free jazz fest on the West Coast, spanning 12 city blocks with 3 main stages, countless vendors and food tents. Whether you’re into classical blues or the main eats, Fillmore Jazz outranks most music festivals in NorCal.

For all you real jazz heads out there, Kim Nalley did an entire set tribute to Ernestine Anderson, internationally acclaimed and renowned jazz and blues artist who died this past March. Kim Nalley, a San Francisco artist, is considered one the world’s best jazz & blues vocalists.

Walking through the festival hearing artist renditions of Prince and Michael Jackson calls back to this year’s theme for the festival: In Tribute. All participating artists would dedicate either whole sets or a track or two to honor the music masters we’ve lost within the past year and beyond.

The Fillmore Jazz Festival is held every year the weekend of the 4th of July, rain or shine. If you can’t wait to get your jazz fix the Oakland Jazz Festival is July 16.
