Bom Kim's Knitwear Is For The Aestheically Minimal
Luxury knitwear is popping up all over the Bay Area, from sweaters to leggings and mittens, oh my, the winter splurge is here to stay. Meet Bom Kim, a recent MFA graduate at the Academy of Art University whose thesis collection truly embodies gorgeous design and real life functionality.
Bom, born and raised in Seoul - South Korea, obtained her Bachelor’s degree at Hansung University in Seoul majoring in fashion design. Studying the broad spectrum of fashion history from ancient to modern, western to eastern, based on a multi-perspective approach. Currently, she is a candidate for a Master’s in Fine Art with an emphasis on Knitwear Design at Academy of Art University.
Being always intrigued by simplistic designs, Kim's aesthetic gravitates towards minimalist design with emphasis on the character of the knitwear piece. She sees knitwear as the combination of art and craftsmanship showcased on the human body. She is proficient in both machine and hand knitting. She thinks that one of the important design elements of knitwear is texture. It is more visually appealing than over-the-top elements. Kim has interest in designs which uses the natural texture of the knit itself, no pressing, dyeing, or starch steaming — what you see is what you get. She creates custom three-dimensional shape appropriate to the desired finished garment structure.
