NYE Reminder: SFMTA Offers Free MUNI Throughout The Night
Yes, you read our headline right.
The SFMTA has released a press statement that for the 18th consecutive year in a row, MUNI and it's umbrella transportation will be free for rider on NYE. Due to the annual surge pricing of both Uber and Lyft, SFMTA is encouraging riders to take a bus home after their night of frolicking around the city.
“We want all San Francisco residents and visitors to have a happy and safe New Year. That’s why we’ve partnered with 76, to once again make Muni free on the last night of the year,” said Ed Reiskin, SFMTA Director of Transportation. “So celebrate the end of 2017 without the worry of drinking and driving. Muni will be available for free to get you around the city and safely home on New Year’s Eve.” This year’s Ride Muni Free New Year’s Eve is sponsored by 76.
So how does it work? From 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. New Year's Day, the MUNI stations will have their gates open for people to pass through freely, clipper card gates will be covered to not charge people and MUNI METRO tickets will not be accepted. This year’s Ride Muni Free New Year’s Eve is sponsored by 76. “76 and SFMTA invite you to Ride Muni free on New Year’s Eve from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on all lines and routes and leave the driving to Muni! We wish you a safe holiday season by being a passenger, not a driver. Happy holidays! We’re on the driver’s side” said Bree Januhowski, 76 Brand Manager.
