Broken glass, fires, and tears littered the streets of Oakland’s bustling downtown last week and photographer Dino Graniello captured the scene as it unfolded.
The fight for Democracy is a double-edged sword, claiming those who are either for or against the change. As Donald Trump claimed his presidency, cities across the country started to go up in flames. Beginning with Oakland, signs that read “Not MY President” and “Pussy grabs Back!” lined the streets from gutter to gutter.
As the protests started peaceful, many local business located in the heart of Uptown Oakland experienced destruction that was not called for. Many local sources report that damages to windows, cars, and personal property costed upwards of $500,000. One sign taped to the window of a local eatery read, “To replace this window costs $5000 each time and Oakland won’t pay for it.” We recognize the peaceful protesters making a legitimate statement but we can’t support those who use the barrel of political injustice to trash and loot the businesses that provide for them daily.
// To our local police of Oakland, we thank you for your service in simple crowd control. Stay safe everyone.
