Style’d SF: Reclaiming Basic

image

If you were to ask a group of people what the word “basic” meant to them, odds are you would get a variety of responses. As with everything, people will always have different opinions and views when it comes to certain things. The word “basic” is one of them.

Basic has had a negative stigma attached to it for a while now, but it has slowly started to run away from its terrible enemy. Basic can now be considered a good thing. Having a basic lifestyle, fashion taste and maybe even a basic mindset can all mean positive things. Not everything has to be considered a pile of trash.

How so? Well one, a basic lifestyle can mean a simple way of living. Some may chose to live their lives in a comfortable and steady pace with their own terms of time and ideology, which is completely okay. Not everyone is suited for a fast paced and heavy lifestyle. For some, a simple day of lounging around and watching a good movie or taking a stroll around the park, and grabbing some ice cream can be the sugar rush one needs. This doesn’t make you any more basic. It just makes you, well you.

How’s that word sounding to you now? Less scary, right?

Alright, let’s move on.

Then we have a basic way of thinking. Sounds kind of weird when said this way, but I promise you basic can be pretty laidback. When it comes to the mind and body, they sometimes have to work together to feel at peace with one another. Sometimes changing your mind on how to treat others, what food to eat, who to spend your time with and how to treat yourself can be quite basic and quite simple. Sometimes we overwhelm ourselves with so many things that we forget to stop and realize that things don’t have to be so complicated and that they can be pretty basic in a good way. I like to think of the word basic as a synonym for simplicity. It can be easy going, free and cool. I mean, what’s so wrong about that?

As for style, this is where the word has had its worst nightmare. However, thanks to the progress I like to believe we’ve made, we can now dress however we want and still look good! Basic wear has the ability to be turned into something fabulous. You just have to take the initiative to think outside the box and transform it into something that will make you feel good and maybe have people stop and look at you! BasicContent for example—a new kind of womenswear brand—is the perfect chameleon. They combined the idea of versatility, basic and comfort to create a simple dress silhouette that would be fun to wear, comfortable, but also easy to transform and make anyone stop and look at the girl who’s wearing it! I think these three factors would make anyone want to dress basic.

Many think that dressing “basic” means sacrificing style, but that is far from the truth. I mean, Basic Content proves it! Trust me, you can make anything work as long as you are willing to try and experiment. It’s 2016, anything is possible and basic can definitely be the new “it”.
