Reading adults are something that has become a rare sight in today’s society. The modern capitalist world has turned us into smartphone addicts who use it for socializing, entertainment, quick searches, GPS, and more, except for one – reading for pleasure. Since the emergence of the texting culture through phones, we are witnessing the basic grammar of our language going down the drain. As the saying goes, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,’ summer reading programs are a great way to start cultivating reading habits in kids. In this article, I am going to share about reading programs organized by government and private bodies and also some ideas that you as a parent can execute on your own. 

1. Public Libraries around you.

The local libraries around you will be the first stop destination when it comes to summer reading. They probably start their programs in May. American Library Association is practicing many programs for kids like Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), Reading Rockets, Summer Meals, and Think Outside the Book. CSLP is the most successful program to date, where it brings children together to play with the themes of the story. A collaboration of active and passive programming will help children develop the need for knowledge grasping.

2. Read in 100 Places.

Create a list of 100 various spots in your house where the children can read over the holidays. Your teen child would no longer be interested in reading around the house. So, you can list 12 different places you can visit during the holidays where they can hopefully read.

3. Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading 2022.

Barners & Noble is one of the biggest online bookstores extending over 50 states. Their summer reading program is specially made for Grade 1 to 6 students. What you are required to do is download the reading journal from their official page and print it out. Read eight books and record the titles in the journal. Bring your completed journal to your nearest Barners & Noble store and redeem a free book.

4. One-Minute Review.

Children need to experience excitement to continue reading. Hence, record them doing a one-minute review of the book they read and upload it to their YouTube channel. Seeing people appreciating them will encourage them to read further.

5. Book It! by Pizza Hut.

Do you know when this program was initiated? 1984. Pizza Hut’s ‘Book It!’ program runs every year from October to March. It is to entrust parents and teachers to encourage children to read by supplying a Reading Award Certificate with a complimentary one-topping personal pan pizza. The minimum age requirement to participate in the program is four by September this year. Parents/Teachers of students aged 4 to 12 are welcome to sign up at the website.

6. Comic Book Challenge.

Reading a comic book also still counts as a reading activity. Parents often misunderstand that comic books are solely for entertainment. It is a considerable choice for beginner readers. There are great educational comics that you get like Hilda and The Troll, Science Comics, and more.

7. Summer Reading Contest by Sonlight.

Sonlight is a homeschool curriculum assisting parents to educate children from pre-school to high school. They have begun their summer reading contest this June which stretches till August. If you are interested, register at their website by entering your email address and download their free summer reading challenge kit and reading chart. Fill up the reading challenge chart by reading great book titles. Once completed, click a picture of the completed chart and the books and share it on your social media with hashtags #sonlightstories and #sonlightreadingchallenge. You will have a bright chance of winning a Sonlight t-shirt.

8. Art book Reading.

Borrow an art book from your nearest library which comprises ancient and modern art. Observe a painting a day and read about it. Bring your kids to the local art gallery and let them be fascinated to find out more about different artists. You can also do the same with National Geography magazines and bring your kids to the zoo.

9. Bookworm Wednesdays by Showcase Cinemas.

Showcase Cinemas is organizing a free summer reading program called ‘Bookworm Wednesdays.’ It is to motivate kids to read during the summer holidays. All they have to do is submit a book report (download it from their website) to the participating theatres. In change, they will get a complimentary entrance ticket for a children’s film they pick. Concurrently parents or guardians and children under six years old are free to enter without a book report submission.

10. Book Quizzes.

Create a questionnaire using Kahoot, Quizizz, or similar software. Present these quizzes to your children after finishing the book they read. It is a fine way to keep children thinking about what they read.

Reading as a habit can help humans in many ways. Research has confirmed that reading can strengthen your brain which is related to physical sensation and body movements. Moreover, it increases the ability of a human to empathize which is crucial for maintaining relationships.
