The Big To-Do: An Editor’s Guide To Oakland + More!

Oh Oakland. We love you so. From your haven of inspiring fashion boutiques to the calming oasis’ that keeps us coming back — you’re a knockout. If you’ve needed a starting point on new (& old) classics to your Oakland experience, let us suggest a few things.

Ali Golden // 482 49th Street

Serving as the Ali Golden flagship store, this sun soaked Temescal Alley brick & mortar shop showcases the entire eponymous collection plus a well curated selection of fun and chic personal and home goods. Like stepping into a curated gallery (that is affordable), get to know this resident with their constantly shuffling selection. A constant source of newness.

Umami Mart // 815 Broadway

Japanophiles unite! This gem in Old Oakland is a one stop shop for imported Japanese goods, including bar & kitchen wares, ceramics, and the bottle shop features a curated selection of sake and beers. Arigato!

Piedmont Springs // 3939 Piedmont Avenue

Looking for a bit of R&R without leaving the bay? Piedmont Springs offers a range of traditional spa treatments, sauna and steam rooms, plus the sought after natural hot spring tubs. Go for the combination room, soak in the outdoor redwood tub with a private cedar sauna and dressing room. Make sure to make a reservation!

Esqueleto // 482 A 49th Street

This earthy treasure trove is full of jewelry, art, and home objects by both local and faraway makers alike. Be sure to attend one of their trunk shows featuring some of their stunning artists. Owner Lauren Wolf first opened the shop’s doors in 2011 after relocating to Oakland from New York and now her and her store have become an instant hit with locals.

Øgaard // 5861 San Pablo Avenue

Textile art work has benefited from a huge resurgence on the scene in recent years, and Øgaard serves as the perfect exhibition space for such magnificent works of art. Enjoy a crafty challenge and sign up for one of their rotating workshops. It’s a must do!

Blue Bottle Coffee // 4270 Broadway

What used to be an automotive showroom now showcases the wonders of Blue Bottle. With a nod to it’s past, part of the cafe is a tinkering workshop. Free brew classes every Wednesday! Enjoy an iced flight of three select cool brews and take in the airy digs.

KronnerBurger // 4063 Piedmont Avenue

Oakland’s burger paradise! Plus lots of marble surfaces to ogle at. Besides their killer burgers, taste the crispy proscuitto & melon or the roasted bone marrow plate, we go back to this chic joint time and time again. And don’t forget to add some french fries of course!

Tara’s Organic Ice Cream // 4731 Telegraph Avenue

Organic, sustainable, and small batch flavors?! Yes, we’d like to sample one of everything please, but really the Lemongrass flavor is our top pick. Doubling as an exhibition space for local artists, take in the ever rotating art that lines the walls of this sweet shop. Keep an eye out for the TOIC TRIKE, peddling their cool treats around Lake Merritt on weekends, weather permitting.

Homestead Apothecary // 486 49th Street

All things herbal! With a wide array of tinctures and dried herbs, mix your own dried concoctions or take home one of their popular blends. Learn more about the importance of herbs and how to use them at one of their many workshops.
